Soon after losing Emily, we decided we would again get a Blue Merle Aussie. After searching the rescue sites, we found Gumbo. The two oldest boys joined 4-H and so it was our goal to get a dog that would be the boys' dog. Gumbo became Sean's dog, our oldest son. The two of them are inseparable! Sean is a great dog owner, he does excellent at taking care of Gumbo!! Gumbo is very keyed into Sean. They have brought home a 1st place award the past two years from showing in 4-H.
We decided Corben could have a dog as he too was wanting to show in 4-H. So again, we went searching the rescue sites. Dink was the choice.. he was close as he was located in a shelter near our home. So off we went to get Dink. We took Gumbo along so they could meet each other. They did just great at the shelter, so we adopted Dink. He was a good boy. He never messed in the home and he was just SO ball/frisbee crazy he made us laugh each time we entered the backyard. Dink, however, decided he needed to protect Corben anytime they were in public... especially around other dogs. Dink would lunge and attack other dogs whenever Corben had him out and about. It was very stressful for everyone. They made it through 4-H the first year without any major upsets, but there were a lot of tears and hard times. We put Dink and Corben through an obedience class where it was determined Dink should not be a 4-H dog with Corben. Dink did well with Ed at the end of the leash, he was a lot more calm. So we decided for Dink to have a happy, healthy life we would find a new home for him. Another difficult decision, but one that we felt would be better for Dink and his future. We camp each year and Dink would just want to attack any and all dogs that came into our sight. We also travel with all our dogs and it was very difficult since our grandparents, siblings, and such all have dogs also.
We also have Blaze, who is Logan's dog. We got Blaze knowing we were getting rid of Dink... however we have had all three dogs together for a year before finding a good home for Dink. Logan and Blaze are also very keyed into one another. Logan takes pride in training Blaze! This spring/summer will be Logan and Blaze's first appearance together in 4-H. Blaze did go last year with Corben showing him and he did well, they took home 1st place in one of the competitions. It will be interesting seeing Blaze and Logan together as they are partners! Corben has decided to do dogless dog for his 4-H project this coming year. He has not decided what to do yet, but I wouldn't doubt if it would be something to do with his experience with Dink!
Dink went to his new home this past weekend. We were very sad to loose him as a member of our family, but we are very grateful to the family that Dink has joined! Adam and Dink hit is off from the start! Adam is an adult male and that is exactly what Dink seem's to need. Adam seemed very determined and "in-charge" from the start! God was very good at pairing the two of them up together!! We now look forward to the updates from Adam and Jamie as Dink goes into his future.
Here are a few pictures of the kiddo's playing with Dink in the backyard the day before we took him to his new family. Dink is SO ball crazy... the kids sat on the sled, held onto Dink's leash and threw the ball... away Dink went in the snow. Dink would just beg and beg for more, he is such a playful dog!! The last one is of Adam his new owner.
